The 3rd House in Astrology: Siblings — or Is It the Mother?

Most modern astrology sites will tell you the 3rd house means "siblings, communication, and short trips" as if that were simply settled. It mostly is — but not unanimously, and the disagreement is worth showing rather than hiding.
Where the sources agree
Vettius Valens' topic-list in Anthologiae IV.12 names this house for siblings, living abroad, power, friends, relatives, and servants (ἀδελφοὶ ξενιτεία βασιλεία ἐξουσία φίλοι συγγενεῖς … δοῦλοι). Firmicus Maternus agrees on the core: "of brothers, in the third" — and adds that "from this place we speak of all matters concerning brothers and friends… it is also the place of one traveling abroad" (Mathesis II.14, II.19).
Where one source disagrees — and we say so
A separate passage in Valens (Anthologiae II.13, II.15) calls this same house θεά — "the goddess," meaning the Moon's house, and states plainly: "the goddess concerns the mother." That is a genuinely different assignment from "siblings."
We don't quietly pick the version that matches what modern astrology already believes. Two independent passages (Valens' list, Firmicus) point to siblings; one passage (Valens, elsewhere) points to the mother. Both are in the historical record. We show both, instead of erasing the one that's inconvenient.
Communication and "short trips"?
Neither ancient source uses that language. "Communication" is a 20th-century addition (from the house's ruling planet, Mercury, in later systems that assign planetary rulers to houses) — not something Valens or Firmicus wrote about the 3rd house directly. We flag additions like this rather than blending them silently into "what astrology says."
