The 9th house is called Θεός — "God" — in the Greek sources, and its content follows from that name more directly than most houses do.
What the texts say
Vettius Valens: "the god signifies the father" (Anthologiae II.7, II.15). His detailed topic-list (IV.12) widens this considerably: friendship, living abroad, benefit from foreigners, god, kings, astronomy, divine matters, oracles, and divination. Firmicus Maternus, independently: "it is the house of the Sun-god. In this place we find the sects of men; it concerns religions and foreign travel" (Mathesis II.19).
The father connection
Ancient astrology's logic here runs through the Sun: the 9th house belongs to the Sun (as the 3rd, opposite it, belongs to the Moon, which Valens ties to the mother). The Sun's traditional association with the father carries the house's meaning along with it — "God's house" reads as "the father's house" by the same reasoning that made the Moon's house the mother's.
The part that's easy to miss: astrology itself
Valens' list explicitly includes astronomy, oracles, and divination as 9th-house topics — which is worth pausing on. The ancient astrologers placed their own craft inside their own system, under "religious and philosophical matters that come from outside the ordinary." Modern astrology keeps "religion and philosophy" as a 9th-house theme, along with "higher education" and "long-distance travel" — extensions of the same foreign/foundational-belief cluster the ancient sources describe, applied to a world with universities and international flights.
