Astrology Compatibility: Two Different Questions People Confuse

"Compatibility" in astrology usually means one of two completely different questions, and most explanations answer only one of them without saying which.

Two questions hiding inside one word

The first question is about two specific people: how do our two charts interact with each other? That's called synastry — overlaying one person's chart against another's and reading the relationship between them.

The second question is about one person and no one in particular yet: does my own chart say anything about when, or whether, I'll get married? That's a very different kind of question — it isn't about a pairing at all, it's about timing within a single life.

Both get typed into a search bar as "astrology compatibility," but they call for different techniques, and an answer built for one doesn't actually address the other. If you ask "will I get married" and get back an explanation of synastry, you haven't been answered — you've been handed the wrong tool.

What synastry actually looks at

Synastry takes two complete charts and compares them directly. Two things get read side by side: where each person's planets fall in the other person's houses (your Venus sitting in their seventh house means something different from your Venus sitting in their second), and what aspects form between the two sets of planets (your Moon in a supportive relationship with their Sun reads differently than your Moon opposing their Mars). Neither chart is read as "better" — the comparison is about how the two patterns sit against each other, not a score for either person individually.

This is a structurally different technique from reading a single chart. It needs both people's birth data, and the result belongs to the pair, not to either person alone.

What "predicting marriage" actually asks

The much larger group of the questions we looked at wasn't about a specific pairing at all — it was almost entirely phrased as "can astrology predict when I'll get married" or "how do you predict marriage age in astrology." That's not a compatibility question in the synastry sense. It's a timing question about one life, and the traditions that address it do so with year-by-year or period-by-period techniques rather than a chart comparison.

We're not going to pretend to answer that one here with a specific method, for a plain reason: doing it honestly takes an actual working system behind it, not a paragraph. What we will say is that this is a real, separate branch of the tradition — not the same question as synastry, and not something a compatibility reading between two people was ever built to answer.

Why we didn't just say "yes, it's accurate" either way

Both questions eventually run into the same doubt we covered in the last piece: how would you know if a "match" or a "prediction" is actually reading the two charts, or just handing back something warm and vague enough to feel true of most couples? That's exactly the Forer effect at work again, now for two people instead of one — a description built to feel personal to any pair, rather than one built from the specific placements in front of it, feels equally accurate to everyone it's given to.

The check is the same one we described before: a synastry statement built from real chart placements is either true of these two specific charts or it isn't. "Your energies balance each other" is true of nearly any two people you hand it to and proves nothing about whether either chart was actually read.
