Zodiac Compatibility: two different questions people confuse

In astrology, the word compatibility usually means one of two completely different questions — and most writing on it answers one of them without saying which.

Two questions hiding inside one word

The first question is about two particular people: how do our two charts work with each other? That is called synastry — laying one person's birth chart over another's and reading the relationship between them.

The second question is about one person who does not yet have a particular someone in mind: does my chart say anything about when, or whether, I marry? That is a different kind of question altogether. It is not about pairing; it is about timing inside a single life.

Both get typed into a search box as "zodiac compatibility". They need different techniques, and an answer built for one does not actually answer the other. If you ask "will I get married" and receive an explanation of synastry, you have not been given an answer — you have been handed the wrong tool.

What synastry actually looks at

Synastry takes two complete birth charts and compares them directly. It reads two things side by side:

• Which house of the other person's chart your planets fall into. A house is one of the twelve divisions of the sky at the moment of birth. Your Venus landing in their seventh house means something different from it landing in their second.
• What angles form between the two sets of planets. An angle — an aspect — is the distance between two planets measured around the circle. Your Moon in a friendly angle to their Sun reads differently from your Moon opposite their Mars.

Neither chart is read as "better". The comparison is not a score for two individuals; it is about how two patterns sit against each other.

This is structurally a different technique from reading one chart. It needs the birth details of both people, and the result belongs to the pair rather than to either person.

What "marriage timing" is actually asking

Far more of the questions we see are not about a particular pair. Almost all of them are phrased as "can astrology predict when I will marry" or "how does astrology predict marriage age". That is not a compatibility question in the synastry sense. It asks about timing inside one life, and the tradition handles it with year-by-year and period-by-period techniques rather than by comparing charts.

We are not going to pretend to answer that here with a specific method, for a simple reason: doing it honestly needs a working system behind it, not a paragraph. What we will say is that it is a real and separate branch of the tradition — not the same question as synastry, and not answered by it.

What we do and do not publish

We publish full birth charts, free, calculated the way the astrology books written in Greek about 2,000 years ago did it — where each planet sits, which sign it is strong or weak in, and the angles between them. A synastry reading needs two of those charts, and the person asking has to have both sets of birth details.

We do not publish a compatibility score. A single number for two people would hide exactly the thing that matters — which placements are doing the work, and which parts cannot be settled without an exact birth time.

What we do not do

We do not tell you whether two people should be together. Nothing in a chart comparison supports a sentence of that shape, and a technique that reads how two patterns sit against each other is not the same as a verdict on a relationship.
