What is Food God (食神) in BaZi? The classics tie it to one thing: what it feeds
Question this answers — "What does Shi Shen mean in Chinese?" ·
"食神是什么意思八字" (what does Shi Shen mean in BaZi) ·
"食神 四柱推命 とは" (what is Shi Shen in Four Pillars fortune-telling)
Shi Shen — usually translated "Food God" or "Eating God" — is one of the Ten Gods
(十神): the element your Day Master produces, sharing its own polarity (yin produces yin,
yang produces yang).)
The short answer
Food God is not judged by itself. The classics judge it by what it feeds — and the
verdict changes completely depending on the answer.
*"Food God fundamentally belongs to the outflow of qi [from the Day Master]. Because it
can generate Direct Wealth (正財), it is favored. Therefore **'Food God generating
Wealth' is a fine structure** — and that Wealth needs a root."*
(On Food God)
The chapter's own logic is in that one sentence: Food God drains the Day Master's energy —
that's not automatically good or bad. It becomes good specifically when what it produces
(Wealth) is usable, i.e. has a root elsewhere in the chart, not just a stem floating alone.
Why "draining" isn't the same as "weakening"
The same chapter explains what that outflow looks like in the person, and it ties directly
to a second common question — why Food God charts get described as clever or expressive:
我生則以同類為順,食神是也。順則有情,逆則力猛。… 大抵食傷為用,主人性質聰明,蓋菁華發越,
秀氣流露,自然有此征驗。
*"What the Day Master produces, of the same polarity, is compliant (順) — this is Food God.
Compliant [gods] have feeling; rebellious [gods, like the Seven Killings] have force.
…Broadly, when Food or Hurting Officer is the useful god, the person's nature tends toward
intelligence — because the refined essence is let out and the fine energy shows itself.
This pattern holds up on repeated observation."*
This is also exactly where KLifeMap's engine places it: Food God (식신) sits in the 식상
(食傷) group, classified as 설기형 (outflow type) — the same 洩氣 the text opens with —
and as one of the four auspicious "순용(順用)" structures (食神格) alongside Direct Officer,
Wealth, and Seal structures. The classical word (洩) and the engine's category (설기형) are
the same idea in two languages, three centuries apart.
The complication people ask about: "Seal robs Food"
A large share of the real questions we collect are variations of "I have Food God and
Seal together, is that bad?" — the classics have a name for exactly this collision:
更有印來奪食,透財以解,亦有富貴,須就其全局之勢而斷之。
*"There are also cases where Seal comes to rob Food; if Wealth appears to resolve it,
wealth and rank are still possible — **but this must be judged from the chart's whole
configuration**, not the two gods alone."*
Seal (印) and Food God pull in opposite directions — one holds energy in, the other lets it
out — so when both are strong, the text's own answer is: look for the third piece (Wealth)
that breaks the standoff, and read the whole chart, not a two-god snapshot.
How we read it
KLifeMap's engine places every character's Ten God relationship first, mechanically, from
the Day Master outward — it does not start from "is Food God good or bad" as a question.
Whether a given Food God is the chart's useful structure, is fighting a Seal, or needs a
Wealth-root to complete it, depends on the other seven characters, exactly as 論食神
insists. That is also why a one-line "Food God = talented and expressive" answer, lifted out
of context, is the "dead method" the same commentary warns against elsewhere in this text.
What this answer does not do
- It does not tell you whether your Food God is well-placed. That needs your full four
pillars — Food God's value depends on what else sits in the chart with it.
- It does not cover Food God interacting with the Seven Killings (食神制煞), a separate,
frequently-asked structure — that is its own chapter in the source text.
- Translations here are ours. The Chinese is quoted verbatim so it can be checked against
