What is Da Yun (大運) in BaZi? "A good chart is not as good as good fortune"

Question this answers"What does daeun mean?" · "How to read bazi luck pillar?" ·
"四柱推命 大運 とは" (what is Da Yun in Four Pillars) · "八字如何看大運"
(how to read Da Yun in BaZi)

(大運 / Da Yun — "Great Fortune," usually translated "luck pillar(s)" — is a roughly
ten-year period, each represented by one stem-branch pair, that unfolds across a lifetime on
top of the four pillars fixed at birth.)

The short answer

The classics don't treat Da Yun as a bonus prediction layered on top of the chart. They
treat it as the second half of the same method — and give it one of the most quoted
lines in the whole text:

富貴定於命,窮通繫乎運,命如植物之種子,而運則開落之時節也。
*"Wealth and rank are fixed by the chart [at birth]; poverty and prosperity depend on the
fortune cycle. **The chart is like a plant's seed, and the fortune cycle is the season of
its blooming and withering.**"*
— 子平真詮評註, 二十五、論行運 (On Fortune Cycles)

A seed doesn't change what species of plant it is. But whether it blooms depends on whether
the season around it matches what it needs.

Same method, different question

The text is explicit that reading a Da Yun period is not a separate skill from reading the
birth chart — it's the same check, run against a different partner:

論運與看命無二法也。看命以四柱干支,配月令之喜忌,而取運則又以運之干,配八字之喜忌。故運中
每運行一字,即必以此一字,配命中干支而統觀之,為喜為忌,吉凶判然矣。
*"Discussing fortune cycles and reading the chart are not two different methods.
Reading the chart matches the four pillars against the month's favorable and unfavorable
[elements]; taking the fortune cycle matches the cycle's own stem against the eight
characters' favorable and unfavorable [elements]. So whenever the cycle brings in a new
character, that character must be checked against the chart's stems and branches together
— read as a whole — and only then does favorable or unfavorable, fortune or misfortune,
become clear."*

In other words: a Da Yun stem or branch isn't judged on its own ("Wood arrives, Wood is
good"). It's judged the same way every other character in the chart is judged — against what
the chart as a whole already needs.

Why a "good chart" can still have a hard decade

This is the part people ask about most — why does a promising chart sometimes go through
rough Da Yun periods, and why can a modest chart have a genuinely strong one?

雖有佳命而不逢時,則英雄無用武地,反之,八字平常而運能補其缺,亦可乘時崛起。此所以有「命好
不如運好」之說也。
*"Even with a fine chart, if it doesn't meet its season, a hero has no place to use his
talents. Conversely, an ordinary chart — if the fortune cycle can supply what it lacks —
can also rise by seizing the moment. **This is the origin of the saying 'a good chart is
not as good as good fortune.'**"*

The chart sets the terrain. The Da Yun period decides whether the current climate suits it.

How we read it

KLifeMap's engine reads each Da Yun period the way 論行運 describes: not as a stand-alone
verdict on the stem or branch that arrives, but checked against what the birth chart already
needs — the same favorable/unfavorable relationship, carried forward one stage. A period
that brings the chart what it's missing reads differently from the same stem arriving on a
chart that already has plenty of it.

What this answer does not do

four pillars plus the specific stem-branch of that period, read together.

when they conflict — that is a related, separate topic.
