All three of Mercury's retrograde periods in 2026 begin in water signs: Pisces early in the year, Cancer in mid-year, and Scorpio on October 24. Astrology writers often say that a year's Mercury retrogrades "move through one element." We checked how true that is.

Using the same planetary-position engine behind our birth charts, we found every Mercury retrograde station from 1950 to 2050 and recorded the sign Mercury was in on the day it turned retrograde.

319 retrogrades, spread evenly over the zodiac

Over 101 years Mercury turned retrograde 319 times, a little over three times a year. No sign is favoured much: each of the twelve signs hosted between 22 and 30 of those starts.

ElementRetrograde starts, 1950–2050
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)83
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)79
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)79
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)78

So over the long run, no element "gets" more Mercury retrogrades than another.

But within a year, they line up

Look one calendar year at a time and the picture changes. In 70 of the 101 years, every Mercury retrograde that started that year began in signs of a single element. 2026 is one of them (water). So is 2025 (fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), and so is 2027, again water.

The reason is mechanical, not mysterious. Mercury turns retrograde roughly every 116 days, and in that time the Sun moves about 115 degrees, close to the 120 degrees that separate signs of the same element. Each new retrograde therefore tends to land about four signs further on: one element, again and again, until the small gap adds up and the pattern slides into the next element.

What this means for October 24

On October 24, Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio, the third water-sign retrograde of the year. It turns direct on November 13. For the same three weeks, Venus is also retrograde, which happens far less often: we counted that overlap separately.

What the numbers do and don't tell you

These counts describe where Mercury appears in the sky when it starts moving backward, an observable pattern. They do not show that a "water-sign year" feels different to a person; that is an interpretation, and these numbers cannot prove or disprove it.

How we counted: hourly check (UTC), 1 January 1950 – 31 December 2050; a retrograde "start" is the first hour Mercury's apparent longitude decreases. Sign is Mercury's tropical sign on that day. Years with only three or four retrogrades were all counted; a year counts as "one element" only if every start that year shares it. The engine uses public low-precision orbital elements, so a station near a sign boundary can fall on either side by a few hours. (An earlier version gave the October start as October 25; it is October 24. Corrected 24 October 2026; the counts did not change.)
