What Is Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny)? A Plain-Language Start
"Bazi" (八字, literally "eight characters") and "Four Pillars of Destiny" are the same system under two names — one Chinese, one English. Search either and most results assume you already know what it is. Here is the entry point that assumes nothing.
The eight characters
Bazi maps your birth into four pairs of characters — one pair each for year, month, day, and hour. Each pair is a "stem" and a "branch," drawn from an ancient sixty-unit calendar cycle still used across East Asia. Four pairs, two characters each: eight characters. That's the whole name.
Those eight characters aren't decoration. Each one carries an element (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) and a yin/yang polarity. Reading a bazi chart means looking at how those eight elements interact — which one is strongest, which is missing, and how they support or clash with each other.
Where "Korean saju" fits in
Bazi and Korean saju (四柱, "four pillars") are the same underlying system, read through slightly different regional traditions.
