The 11th house carries one of the more optimistic names in the twelve: Ἀγαθὸς Δαίμων in Greek, Bonus Daemon in Latin — the "Good Spirit," or Good Daemon.
What the texts say
Vettius Valens: "the Good Daemon concerns children" (Anthologiae II.6, II.15) — but his fuller list (IV.12) reads: friends, hopes, gifts, children, freed slaves. Firmicus Maternus, independently, resolves the emphasis: "this place is called the Good Spirit, or Good Genius… it is the house of Jupiter" (Mathesis II.19).
The consistent thread across both authors, once you set the (repeated, and possibly copied-forward) mention of children aside, is friendship and hope — plus, distinctly, its status as Jupiter's own house.
Why Jupiter's house reads as "good"
In the ancient scheme, Jupiter is a benefic planet — one whose influence ancient astrologers treated as generally favorable. A house described as "Jupiter's own place" inherits some of that reputation directly: friendship, hope, and gifts read as a natural cluster for the most favorably regarded planet in the system.
Its position, opposite the 5th
The 11th sits directly opposite the 5th house (children) in the chart. Several ancient topic-lists (Valens' among them) repeat "children" across both houses, which is one of the small internal inconsistencies the surviving texts carry rather than resolve. We note it rather than picking one and pretending the other doesn't exist.
