The 12th house closes out the twelve with the harshest name in the set: Κακὸς Δαίμων — the "Bad Daemon" — Saturn's own house.
What the texts say
Vettius Valens: "the Bad Daemon concerns sufferings" (Anthologiae II.5, II.15). His fuller list (IV.12) reads: foreign hostility, servants, injury, dangers, judgments, suffering, death, illness. Firmicus Maternus: "from this place we find the character of enemies and the condition of servants… we also find vices and illnesses in this place. It is the house of Saturn" (Mathesis II.19).
Why Saturn's house lands here
Saturn is the more severe of the two ancient malefic planets — associated with restriction, delay, and difficulty. A house named "Bad Daemon" and explicitly labeled Saturn's own turf carries that character forward directly, the same way Jupiter's house (the 11th, its exact opposite) carries an optimistic one.
What it doesn't say
Modern astrology sometimes describes the 12th house as "the unconscious," "spirituality," or "self-undoing" in a more introspective, Jungian sense. None of that language is in Valens or Firmicus. What is there — hidden enemies, confinement (the "servants" language in an ancient context often maps to imprisonment or bondage), and suffering — is a harder, more concrete set of topics than "the unconscious." The modern psychological reading is a real and widely used later layer; it just isn't the ancient one, and we'd rather tell you that than blur the two into one seamless-sounding "tradition."
