Your Ascendant — commonly called your "rising sign" — is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born.
Why it's a different calculation from your sun sign
Your sun sign only depends on your birth date — the Sun moves through roughly one sign per month, so anyone born in a given range of dates shares the same one. Your rising sign depends on your birth time and place as well, because the Earth completes a full rotation every 24 hours — which means the Ascendant moves through the entire zodiac in a single day, roughly one sign every two hours.
That's why two people born on the same date, in the same city, three hours apart, can have completely different rising signs. It's also why "what's my rising sign" can't be answered from a birthday alone — it needs the clock time and a location.
Why ancient astrology treated it as central, not decorative
In the Hellenistic system (Vettius Valens, Firmicus Maternus), the Ascendant isn't just one placement among many — it's the anchor the entire chart's twelve houses are counted from. Valens' term for it, Ὡροσκόπος (Horoskopos, "hour-marker"), is also where the modern word "horoscope" comes from — a reminder that the original meaning of the word was specifically about this one calculated point, the exact rising degree at the hour of birth, not "your daily reading."

Why you need an exact birth time
Because the Ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes, even a birth time that's off by twenty or thirty minutes can shift it into a neighboring sign — and shift every house cusp along with it.
