"What's your sign?" is really three separate questions, and each one needs different information to answer.

Sun sign — needs only your birth date

The Sun moves through the zodiac at a steady pace, spending roughly a month in each sign. Your sun sign depends only on the calendar date you were born — no birth time or location required. This is the sign in newspaper horoscope columns, and it's the only one of the three that a birthday alone can answer.

Moon sign — needs your birth date, and roughly which day

The Moon moves far faster than the Sun — through the entire zodiac in about 27 days, changing signs every two to two-and-a-half days. That means your moon sign can differ from someone born even a day or two before or after you. It needs your birth date at minimum, and for anyone born close to a sign change, the birth time settles which side of the line they fall on.

Rising sign (Ascendant) — needs your exact birth time and place

This one moves fastest of all: roughly one sign every two hours, because it tracks the Earth's rotation rather than a planet's orbit. Why they can point in different directions

Because each placement moves at a different speed and needs different inputs, a chart with a Virgo sun, a Pisces moon, and a Leo rising isn't a contradiction — it's simply three different clocks (one monthly, one roughly-monthly-but-faster, one daily) read at the same single moment. Ancient astrology never treated the Sun's position alone as "your whole chart" — that compression is a much later, newspaper-column-era simplification.
