A conjunction is the aspect with the shortest possible distance between two planets: zero signs apart. They sit in the same sign of the zodiac.

Why five aspects, and why conjunction is one of them

Claudius Ptolemy, in Tetrabiblos I.14, explains the classical aspects through musical ratios — the same whole-number ratios that ancient music theory used to explain which intervals sound consonant. Opposition is a 2:1 ratio, trine and sextile are 3:2, square is 4:3. Conjunction sits at the start of that scheme: the two planets are not just harmonious, they are at the same point in the zodiac, the closest relationship two planets can have.

Sign to sign, not degree to degree

We read aspects the way the Hellenistic sources describe them — sign to sign, not degree to degree. Robert Hand, editing Paulus Alexandrinus's Introductory Matters (tr. Robert Schmidt, Project Hindsight), puts it plainly: "There do not seem to be any orbs as they are known in the modern West. Any point in Aries is in trine to any point in Leo or Sagittarius, regardless of orb. … Despite misleading footnotes by modern commentators, Ptolemy also seems to have used aspects from sign to sign." The "orb tables" many sites use today (Saturn 10°, Jupiter 12°, and so on) trace back to a 19th-century translator's footnote, not to Ptolemy himself. We show the exact degree difference too, as background information — but it is not what decides whether the aspect exists.

For a conjunction specifically, this means: two planets anywhere within the same sign are conjunct, whether they sit one degree apart or twenty-eight. The exact degree gap changes how tight the conjunction looks, but it does not change whether it exists.
