What Is Planetary Dignity in Astrology? Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, and Fall

Ancient astrology doesn't read a planet the same way regardless of which sign it's sitting in. It grades the planet's strength in that sign using a system called dignity — and the grading table itself is fixed, not a matter of interpretation.

The four core grades

Domicile (or "rulership"): a planet in the sign it owns — Mars in Aries, for instance — is read as being "at home," operating at full strength and comfort.

Exaltation: a planet in a specific sign where it's read as unusually elevated and effective — the Sun in Aries is the standard example — even though it isn't that sign's ruler.

Detriment: the opposite of domicile — a planet sitting in the sign opposite the one it rules, read as working against its own nature.

Fall: the opposite of exaltation — the sign opposite a planet's exaltation, where it's read as unusually weakened.

Where the table itself comes from

This isn't a modern invention or a single author's opinion — the domicile and exaltation assignments appear consistently across the ancient sources (Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos and Firmicus Maternus' Mathesis, among others), which mostly agree with each other on the core table, with some named disagreements the ancient authors themselves discuss openly (there are a few signs where different sources give different exaltation degrees, and honest astrology writing should say so rather than picking one silently).

Why it changes what a reading actually says

The same planet, say Venus, sitting in Pisces (its exaltation) versus Virgo (its fall) is read completely differently — not because of vague "energy," but because the ancient framework assigns it a specific, named strength grade in each case, the way a hand of cards is graded before it's played. Dignity is the layer of the system that answers "how strong is this placement," separately from "what topic does this placement touch" (which is the houses' job).

What we calculate

Your free birth chart grades every planet's dignity — domicile, exaltation, detriment, and fall — the same way, every time, from your exact birth data. It's a calculation, not a vibe.
