The 2nd house is the house of money and possessions — what you have, and how you come to have it, including sudden or unexpected gains.

What the texts actually say

Vettius Valens lists it as governing inheritance, property, and "sudden acquisition through death" (Anthologiae II.9), and separately names it Ἅιδου πύλη — the Gate of Hades (II.14). Firmicus Maternus, writing independently in Latin, calls the same house "the house of hope or of money" and separately confirms it is "called the infernal gate" (Mathesis II.14, II.17).

The myth we can correct with sources, not opinion

If you've read general astrology writing, you may have seen "the Gate of Hades" attached to the 7th house instead — often alongside claims about death, endings, or "the shadow side of relationships." We checked. Across Valens (two separate passages) and Firmicus (writing in a different language, a different century, independently), the phrase belongs to the 2nd house, tied to money and inheritance — not the 7th. The 7th house does have its own solid classical footing, just for a completely different reason (marriage — see our 7th house article). The nickname simply got attached to the wrong number somewhere in the game of telephone that is popular astrology.

What actually shows up here

Two things, consistently, across every source: possessions you accumulate and money that arrives suddenly — through inheritance, in the ancient framing, since sudden death was the most common cause of an unplanned windfall in the ancient world.
