People land here from "natal chart" more than almost any other astrology search — and most pages that show up don't actually explain what one is before asking for a birth time. Here is the short, honest version.

What a natal chart actually is

A natal chart is a map of where the sun, moon, and planets sat in the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. Astrologers plot that sky onto a wheel of twelve houses (areas of life — career, relationships, home) and twelve zodiac signs (the qualities each planet expresses through). Your natal chart is not one placement. It is roughly ten placements at once — sun sign, moon sign, rising sign, and where each visible planet fell — layered together.

Why "just my sun sign" isn't a chart

A horoscope column reads your sun sign alone. A real natal chart needs three things: date, place, and time of birth to the minute. Miss the time and two pieces shift the most:

• The Ascendant (rising sign) — the sign on the eastern horizon at your exact birth minute. It can change every two hours.
• The houses — which life area each planet's energy lands in. These rotate with the clock, not the calendar.

Everything else (sun, moon sign, and most planet signs) is fixed by date alone and doesn't move if the time is off by an hour. We say which is which — we don't guess a time to fill in the rest.
