When Does the 2027 Year of the Fire Goat Begin in BaZi? February 4, Not Lunar New Year
2027 is the year of the Fire Goat (丁未, Ding Wei). But in BaZi, the Four Pillars system, the year does not change on January 1, and not on Lunar New Year either. It changes at Li Chun (立春, "start of spring"), the moment the Sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude.
When the Fire Goat year begins
| Time | |
|---|---|
| Li Chun 2027 (Sun at 315°) | February 4, 2027, about 01:43 UTC |
| In Seoul / Tokyo | February 4, about 10:43 |
| In Beijing / Singapore | February 4, about 09:43 |
| In London | February 4, about 01:43 |
| In New York | February 3, about 20:43 |
For comparison, Li Chun 2026 (the start of the Fire Horse year) fell at about 19:56 UTC on February 3, 2026, which was 04:56 on February 4 in Seoul.
What this means for a birth date
| Born (local time) | BaZi year pillar |
|---|---|
| January 1 – before Li Chun, 2027 | 丙午 Bing Wu — Fire Horse (2026's pillar) |
| From Li Chun, February 4, 2027 | 丁未 Ding Wei — Fire Goat |
A baby born on February 3, 2027 is a Fire Horse in BaZi, even though the calendar year is 2027. Lunar New Year is a different boundary. It follows the new moon, and popular Chinese-zodiac sites often use it, which is why the two systems sometimes give a different animal for births in late January and early February.
Why the boundary matters at the minute
Li Chun also changes the month pillar (to 壬寅, Ren Yin, the Tiger month). A birth within a few minutes of Li Chun can land in either year and either month, so the birth time and time zone matter. Our calculation is accurate to about a quarter of an hour. For a birth that close, check the official almanac of your country's astronomical institute.
What the numbers do and don't tell you
When the Sun reaches 315° is astronomy. The meaning BaZi gives to a Fire Goat or Fire Horse year pillar is a traditional interpretation, and this calculation cannot prove or disprove it. It can tell you which side of the boundary a birth falls on.
How we calculated: the Sun's apparent longitude from the public-domain (Meeus) solar formulas in our engine, searched to the minute for 315°. Year and month pillars follow the standard sexagenary cycle.
